Admissions Criteria

The Incubators (LIHTI, CEWIT, or AERTC) at Stony Brook University are always accepting applications from new startup, high-tech businesses. The application process can begin by contacting and speaking with, or meeting with, the LIHTI Executive Director to discuss what your needs are and what potential options we have for you here. The meeting is also to tour and see what the LIHTI has to offer. A formal online application needs to be filled out, which will be submitted to the Incubator Selection and Review Committee (ISRC).

The ISRC will review the application. Then an incubator director may call for information to clarify something on your application. We will ask for you to fill-out a 5 slide power-point (our template must be used) and then be scheduled for a Zoom interview. Someone will guide you through creating this power-point. The meeting is a 10 minute presentation by you, and another 10 minutes for questions.

Our space is limited and priority is for companies that have or will have a strong relationship with the university; licensing SBU technology, collaborating with faculty, hiring graduates, training, internships, etc. The most important question is why would you like to be at Stony Brook? Why is it important to be at one of our incubators rather than in commercial space? Incubators are meant to be a temporary place to start and grow a technology-based business. We expect you will graduate at some point and our annual reviews will help guide toward graduation.

If we find your company is a good match for our incubators, then we will show options available for space. A one year term lease or “revocable permit” will be offered. All leases are annual and require an annual meeting with the ISRC for renewal.
